The Office of Risk Management and Insurance is responsible for the overall strategies in managing the complex loss exposures on a universitywide basis. This includes the identification and assessment of potential risks and exposures undertaken by university units that could result in financial loss (i.e. due to injury or damage to persons or property, loss of contracts, and/or disruption to operations). These responsibilities are divided into three major elements:

1. Risk Financing

The purchase of commercial insurance policies as a means of protecting the university from the financial consequences of loss
The use of deductibles and self-insured retentions in conjunction with these policies in the most cost effective manner
Participation in a Bermuda-based captive reinsurance company owned by an association of 15 universities - Genesis Limited
Loss prevention/control and risk analysis practices

2. Claims and Litigation Management

Tort claims - general liability losses
Automobile liability - fleet losses
Self-insured worker's compensation program
Property damage and theft losses
D & O - employment practice claims

3. Risk Transfer and Contract Review

Contract review of insurance and indemnification provisions is an effective strategy to reduce, minimize, and transfer loss exposure. Risk Management is actively involved in the following areas of contract review: clinical affiliation agreements, construction contracts, technology transfer and licensing agreements, academic program initiatives, procurement contracts, and student life programming agreements.
