Subject: Revision of University Regulation 50.3.2, Service of Legal Process
I am writing to update you on changes to the Service of Legal Process, University Regulation 6.4.3. The purpose of this regulation is to ensure that legal service is delivered to the appropriate university office in a timely manner and to provide guidelines for requesting legal assistance from University Counsel.
The officer of the university designated to receive legal service is Debra Norman, the Secretary of the University Corporation. Therefore, all process servers seeking to make service upon the university should be directed to the Office of the Secretary of the University Corporation, Room 207, Old Queens Building, 83 Somerset Street, New Brunswick, New Jersey 08901. The backup recipient of legal service is the Office of University Counsel, Room 402, Winants Hall, 7 College Avenue, New Brunswick, New Jersey 08901.
If legal process is inadvertently accepted elsewhere at the university, the recipient should immediately notify, by telephone, the Office of the Secretary of the University Corporation at 732-932-5661, or the Office of University Counsel at 732-932-7697. Furthermore, the recipient should personally deliver the legal documents or send the process server to the Office of the Secretary of the University Corporation or to the Office of University Counsel.
More information about university legal matters is available at http://ur.rutgers.edu/legal . The site provides guidelines for receiving legal process, subpoenas, and administrative complaints, and also explains where to go for legal guidance concerning faculty and staff matters. It is important to note that University Counsel is only empowered to represent the university’s legal affairs. Therefore, legal counsel staff cannot give personal legal advice to faculty, staff or students. If you have questions about this process, please contact the appropriate office listed on the web site, or University Counsel at 732/932-7697. For the updated version of University Regulation 6.4.3, visit the University Regulations and Procedures Manual web site at http://ruweb.rutgers.edu/regulations/ .
Thank you for your cooperation in ensuring that the guidelines set forth in University Regulation 6.4.3 are followed.
